They can’t access online encyclopedias. They basically can’t access online anything. If teachers want kids to use online resources in class, they must take home a classroom set of laptops and download the information to each computer in preparation for the school day. While the federal government awards billions of dollars annually to get schools and libraries online, through its E-rate program, Albemarle’s project is technically ineligible for that because it’s “off campus,” even though it will be an extension of the school network with all its security, filters and firewalls.

But the iPads will be discontinued next year in favor of the Dell Latitude Education Series (3160) touchscreen laptop computer. If it’s free to play with, and easy to learn about through communities working to improve the open source code, the assumption is that more people (and younger people) will start to get interested in working with AI.

As we wrapped up 2020, we thought for sure that 2021 might bring us a reprieve from pandemic learning. Virtual and hybrid learning continued into the spring, but then classrooms welcomed back students for full-time in-person learning in the fall. Well, it did–but it also didn’t. billion by 2022.
