OPINION: The pandemic will leave struggling readers even further behind

The Hechinger Report

As if the pandemic weren’t enough, we’re about to be hit with another tsunami, one not likely to be fought with a vaccine. Thousands of our nation’s students aren’t learning to read, and the patchwork of instructional programs, limited resources and frequent change from hybrid to virtual schooling surely is contributing to the problem. Pre-pandemic, we weren’t doing all that well in teaching our children to read.

COVID-19 Has Widened the Skills Gap. But It Also Presents an Opportunity to Close It.

Edsurge

America’s skills gap has been widely discussed. The friction between postsecondary institutions failing to properly prepare job seekers and unrealistic employer expectations has led to seven million unfilled openings. PROOF POINTS: New answers to old questions about special education

The Hechinger Report

The federal requirement for schools to provide extra services to children with disabilities has been around for more than 45 years. More than 7 million children , about 14 percent of all public school students, now receive services. Although it costs state, local and federal governments an estimated $90 billion a year, we know very little about whether special education services are actually helping students with disabilities learn more.
