'First year New Milford High School teacher Mrs. Westbrook has been tackling the Common Core in an engaging and innovative fashion. One major instructional shift required by the Common Core Curriculum Standards is the increased emphasis on the use of informational texts. As students engage nonfiction, they learn to grapple with complex ideas and arguments and use those ideas in forming their own opinions.

'I have had the honor and privilege of spending the last week in Doha, Qatar at the World Innovation Summit on Education (WISE) Conference. This has been an incredible learning experience for me. Reflection is a big part of my learning so I have many thoughts, and ideas going through my mind. Global Thinking-While here I have been exposed to so many different parts of the world and heard about how education works (or doesn''t) in all corners of the global.

GCFLearnFree is a program of Goodwill Industries of Eastern NC and provides quality online learning courses for free. They have a large amount of free computer training resources that are well designed, easy to use and understand, and great for sharing with faculty, staff, and students.

'I''ve been encouraging teachers to use Google Drive (Docs) with their students for several years now. The collaborative and sharing features of Google Drive are unsurpassed and enable tremendous learning opportunities. Managing files to/from students and teachers from Google Drive has always been a bit of a challenge. The advent of shared folders was a great leap forward and provided a much quicker way to setup up the infrastructure to move documents between students and teachers.

'I love Evernote. It''s no surprise. I use it for everything and even more now in my new job as Chief Information Officer of the district. It allows me to keep everything - notes, files, and more all accessible anywhere on any device. I use the web clipper, Livescribe SkyPen , Android App, web app, and Windows Desktop App. As a teacher, we all used the web version of Outlook.

'Like many of us who attended ASHA this week, I still have what is known as the "ASHA Hangover." This does not have to do with consuming adult beverages (though there were a few, I admit) so much as consuming knowledge, walking yards and yards of various carpets and traversing escalators (lots of escalators!) occasionally waiting in long lines, and pretty much talking incessantly leading to my vocal folds going on strike.

'Last night, the #edchat topic was, "How should teachers deal with colleagues who are comfortable with 19th century and punitive measures for non-compliant students?" Judging by the responses, many teachers either felt they could gently prod this colleague to changing his or her practice. Others did not see this their responsibility at all. They saw it as the responsibility of the administrator.

Even days after the tragedy of Hurricane Sandy, over 1 million New Jersey residents are still without running water or power. 'No words can convey the sense of loss and devastation. This is the irony of being an English teacher: I cannot articulate my feelings over this disaster. The island has shaped who I am today and who my children will be. Rebuilding will be a long process that will be ongoing even after the media has turned their eyes to a new story and the fervor for donating has diminished.

'Google , one of my favorite resources (in addition to Evernote ) has lots of great things for education, including free apps and services. They also have a great library of lesson plans for educators. There are thousands of lesson plans available and all are searchable and sortable. Sorting can be done by type of Google product used, subject, or age group.

'Students often view presenting in front of the whole class with the same disdain as facing a firing squad or are so self-conscience that they act like idiots. Additionally, finding precious time for whole class presentations can eat into high-paced curricular calendars. We are still trying to get back on track from Hurricane Sandy, so this project was a quick way to get students to present and share without the stress of being in front of the class or take up class time.

'In my previous series on using QR codes in speech and language intervention, we covered how clinicians can use this engaging visual strategy to easily "hide" text and images behind a code scannable by mobile devices. The result is kind of a high-tech (but simple) hide and seek where stimuli related to articulation, vocabulary, sentence structure, narrative skills, you name it, can be accessed by your students.

'Cross posted at the Huffington Post. This past month my family and I suffered a devastating loss as my grandmother passed away only a few weeks after being diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor. Abiding by her wishes not to inconvenience anyone, my parents arranged for friends and family to call an hour prior to the funeral, which was then followed by a short service.

'Now that 45 states (and 3 territories) have adopted the Common Core Standards, edu-preneurs and opportunists have gone into overdrive, churning out tons of materials, programs, and trainings to help schools and school districts implement these standards. Not a day goes by that I don''t receive 15 or so emails from companies and individuals offering their wares and promising successful and complete implementation of the Common Core Standards.

'Prezi, the zooming presentation editor , has a new version of it''s interface. Prezi is a nice alternative to things like PowerPoint for making presentations. Instead of slides, you create presentations using any thing as the basis, from a word to an image. You can change how the presentation moves from part to part and integrate video directly into the presentation.

'Teaching students to infer and formulate arguments can easily be in context of a novel. Using Steinbeck''s Of Mice & Men , students can analyze the text to create an outline for a mock trial for either George or Lennie. The final project can be completed on paper, using word processing skills and completed using a student''s BYOD device. A student''s smartphone or tablet does not have to just be used for a special occasion in the classroom.

'You might be surprised that when Anthony Salcito , VP of education for Microsoft speaks with educators around the world and asks them who’s doing a 1:1 laptop program or 1:1 tablet program or 1:1 interactive whiteboard program, he tells those with their hands up : “Stop doing that.” He explains that he’s seen whole initiatives centered around various devices to the point that many other useful tools and pedagogy are thrown out the window so the device-driven initiative can be supported.
