'This morning I attended a meeting with students that represent New Milford High School and my superintendent. The purpose of the "Superintendent''s Council" is to allow students to have a voice and empower them to make meaningful changes to the culture of the District. During the meeting the students were asked what changes or initiatives they would like to see.

'Google Apps for Education is quickly becoming a significant force in education. Google recently announced that over 10 million students have gone Google. Google is an engineering company that has created some unbelievably useful products. Computer engineering is what they do and they do a great job at it. Training, support, and marketing are not their strongest suites.

And when they ask why we tell them all kinds of things like it is important to stay relevant in our careers and it is important for humanity to have people who enjoy learning, etc. (You probably have something much more creative and fun than mine.) 'It takes one a lot of time to consolidate all we learn at a conference like the ASHA Convention. Unfortunately some years we never fully do consolidate the information, because we are thrown back into the busy schedule and, well, it''s HARD to integrate new practices. I think it''s helpful to have realistic expectations of ourselves and consider a conference successful if we have a few new ideas that we implement.

I recently read two good blog posts about higher education: one by Clark Quinn and the other by Andy Cloverdale. In both posts they point out the need for change in the way that education is provided at the University and the way instructors/professors are trained to teach in the University. This and the extreme budget cuts to our university in the face of rising enrollments got me thinking about the call for "reform" in how our universities are run in the US today.

'Hi, My name is Gwyneth and I use Wikipedia every day. There, I said it. Somehow that''s pretty freeing! Wikipedia is NOT a dirty word. We''re doing a disservice not teaching our kids HOW to use it and how to cite it.as in - ummm selectively & with forethought. Sadly, I don''t believe teachers & college professors are ready to wrap their mind around or admit recent studies that show: Wikipedia as accurate as Britannica.

'I was re-reading a recent post by George Couros ( Is Change the True Barrier? ) and began to reflect on some of the comments made directly on his site as well as those in the Twitter stream. The following comment by David Jakes really got me thinking: " Perpetual never-ending conversation about change is the barrier." As I looked more into the recent pleas for change in education I came across this video: Talk is cheap (I do think this is a pretty good video though)!

'I realized today that I have talked a lot about my various Livebinders but never really have taken the time to explain what they are or how they work. First, a video. Think of Livebinders as a virtual 3 ring binder that you can put pretty much anything in. Webpage, PDF, image, video, text, they all can go into a page organized for you. Each item can be on it''s own tab or you can further organize by using sub-tabs.

'This was my fifth ASHA experience- I have been fortunate enough to make it to Miami, Chicago, Boston, New Orleans and Philly. I know that it can be overwhelming at first, and I usually get so discombobulated that I commit some kind of major faux pas. I recall back in Chicago, I saw a gentleman walking toward the escalator, spied his last name on his badge, and thought I knew him from Boston University.

However, as we grapple around the world with how higher education should be structured and funded, we aren't willing to reexamine the underlying beliefs upon which the funding and academic structures were created.

'Voice Cards is an iPhone/iPod/iPad app you can use to create stacks of "flash" cards with auditory rather than written information. The app is currently priced at $.99- very reasonable for such a versatile therapy resource. Voice Cards is really easy to use and has many applications for SLPs- it would be motivating to use with students'' vocabulary lists.

'A few months ago I interviewed John Taylor Gatto for my “ Future of Education ” interview series. From 1989-1991 Mr. Gatto was recognized as the New York City teacher of the year, as well in 1991 as the New York State teacher of the year. In the summer of 1991 he retired abrubptly, and in a very public way: in an op-ed piece published in the Wall Street Journal where he claimed by being a part of the public school system he was harming students more than helping them.

'The Make a Stuffed Turkey game at Primary Games is a fun way to work on sequencing and helping kids understand all that goes into a Turkey Dinner. The click-and-drag activity prompts each step in "making" a stuffed turkey, and is great fun (though the music is annoying). I recently spotted this very interesting site called Vyou.com which exploits video to create asynchronous conversations. I find it interesting because of the simple way it creates presence. As you can see below, it looks like the person (me in this case) is waiting ready for your question. All visitors need to do is type a question into the text line below the video and the creator will get a message with the question and post a reply.
