A Wake Up Call For School Leaders

A Principal's Reflections

'So the other day I tweeted out this comment, “I am amazed each day to see so much educational progress in my Twitter feed. This should be the norm, not the exception.” Many people in education talk a great game when it comes to the effective use of technology, but the results (lack there of) speak for themselves. I constantly see and hear about leaders who tout themselves in a way that makes others develop a perception that they actually know something about the effective integration of a varie

Demand, district adoption, and silver bullets

K12 Open Ed

'A few us have been pondering the question “ How can we best advance the adoption of OER in K-12? ” both online in this document and f2f at the Open Ed 14 conference. As I’ve thought about this, a few conclusions I’ve come to are: The demand problem is more significant than the supply problem. There is currently a good amount of high quality, standards-aligned OER in K-12 with lots more coming online.

Formative Assessment with Plickers

If You're Not Giving, You're Not Teaching

The Innovative Educator

'Thanksgiving is a great time to think about and celebrate giving. The best teachers are the best givers, but not all teachers believe in giving. In fact some teachers think it is unfair to be expected to share their hard work. I was reminded of this recently during a conversation among innovative educators who were discussing how much they enjoy the opportunity to share best practices and materials across schools.

ASHA 2014 Takeaways!

'Hope you all had a great Thanksgiving! For me, the holiday followed soon upon returning from the ASHA 2014 Convention in Orlando, where I presented and also attended many sessions. It was fun being in Orlando, even with sort of crappy (cold, then rainy) weather. I rented a Yaris just like mine at home! Well, newer and nicer, but. Overall I applaud ASHA for a great event.

Video for assessment

Learning with 'e's

'I have always believed that assessment should be primarily for the benefit of the student, not the teacher. I concede that teachers need to know how their students are progressing, and this is very much a part of the assessment process. However, assessment of learning is not as important as assessment for learning. When it comes to supporting a student''s progress, showing them what they can do to improve, or perform better is the key.

Can Brain Science Actually Help Make Your Training & Teaching Stick?

Speaker: Andrew Cohen, Founder & CEO of Brainscape

The instructor’s PPT slides are brilliant. You’ve splurged on the expensive interactive courseware. Student engagement is stellar. So… why are half of your students still forgetting everything they learned in just a matter of weeks? It's likely a matter of cognitive science! With so much material to "teach" these days, we often forget to incorporate key proven principles into our curricula — namely active recall, metacognition, spaced repetition, and interleaving practice.
