Some of these changes are due to globalization, but the main “culprit” is technology, with its disruptive effects in all aspects of our lives. Gen Z students – or zoomers – the first generation of digital natives, relate to technology differently from previous cohorts. If technology is a tool for Millennials, zoomers naturally integrate technology into their everyday lives.

Long gone are the days that a one-size-fits-all education program could even be considered an effective option to meet the needs of every student. While an array of successful strategies associated with more traditional methodologies still have value today, we need to rethink how and when they are used. What happens in the classroom will always be of utmost importance, but specific programs need to be in place that serves the diverse needs of all students who are the most vulnerable.

I recently had a chance to keynote Big Blue Button’s first-ever Global Conference. Afterward, I sat down (virtually) with Robert Hocking and we chatted about some deeper learning concepts that I had mentioned in my talk. The half-hour video on ‘ major shifts in education ‘ is below. I hope that it’s useful to you. Across the country, “help wanted” signs are showing up in K–12 school windows as districts face a record number of staff shortages. For example, 3,600 education jobs in Illinois remain unfilled, teacher retirements are up 38 percent year over year in Oklahoma, and teacher vacancies in Florida were up 67 percent in August 2021 compared with the same time last year.

October 24th – November 7th. My wonderful son is changing his duty station from Okinawa Japan to Fort Dietrich Maryland. To celebrate his return to the US, we are taking a 3,700+ mile road trip across the country, from California to Maryland with a stop over to see my daughter, also in Maryland. We have a lot of sights to see, at the top of the list SpaceX’s center in Bolsa Chica Texas and Florida.
