We talked about the importance of nurturing a learning community over time and providing regular opportunities for students to engage with each other to build relationships. We also discussed the challenges of building community when learning is happening in part, or exclusively, online.

Administrators at the School District of Palm Beach County have been working for years to develop a workforce of educators who not only are eager to innovate in the classroom but who also are skilled enough to coach and support their peers. A key part of that effort is the district’s Teaching with Technology Trailblazer program, which launched in 2017 and has included 700 to 800 teachers each year, says Adam Miller, director of educational technology.

With the rush to virtual schooling, districts nationwide have been looking for ways to expand student connectivity. Officials in Palm Beach County, Fla., called in the cavalry to help. The School District of Palm Beach County is driving the creation of a civic Wi-Fi mesh network that will bring broadband to some 25,000 students. To make it happen, district leaders are working in partnership with local government, nonprofits, vendors and other stakeholders.

In June, the Edcamp Community joined our Digital Promise family. The Edcamp Community supports educators to organize and participate in participant-driven professional learning designed by and for educators. Edcamps are free public events that leverage the knowledge and experiences of attendees by allowing educators to collaboratively determine topics for discussion and choose which sessions are meaningful to them.

As we watched the events at the Capitol unfold on January 6th, like many, our team jumped into crisis response mode. A planned all-day, company-wide training and retreat was canceled, as we checked in on teammates in the D.C. area, and reached out to partners, family, and friends to see how we might support them. We created safe spaces for each other to debrief and discuss, find some comfort amid the uncertainty, and pause on our to-do lists for the day if needed.
