At the Millvale Community Library in Pennsylvania, toddlers and kids gather weekly to work on creative projects. On those days the library morphs into a “makerspace,” overflowing with sewing supplies, circuitry, yarn, and electronics. For several years YOUmedia has operated “learning labs” in libraries across the country.

For our beginning of the year passion projects, some students chose to teach others about our robotic filming Swivl tool and app. Maker Movement. Many schools are creating maker spaces or “ Fab Labs ” so students have a space and place to invent. Some libraries are putting these in a Learning Commons. (See

Tomorrow marks the first day of the national Week of Making , a week dedicated to celebrating makers and providing opportunities for people across the country to make. Our video series began in Sitka, Alaska , where we saw maker learning happening across all schools in the district with support from all members of the community.

When we have testing in our Library, I put all our Makerspace stuff on an AV cart and roll it into our server room. You can take baby steps into the Maker Movement. I'm not 100% sold, even after 7 years of talking about the Maker Movement, that it's something that's here to stay and not just a fad. Just like new!

A video my student, Rebekah, created for the Invention Project. One requirement is that if students have seen the technology in action, it’s disqualified from being the topic of their video — a commercial pretending that their invented technology actually exists.
